Letter from the Editor: Carbon Trading – Monetizing the "Green!"

Letter from the Editor: Carbon Trading – Monetizing the "Green!"
Demand for new information technology across the globe creates 4,000 tons of e-waste every hour, which piles up around the globe. Manufacturers like Dell and HP are now taking responsibility and have established recycling programs to recover much of this waste.

To minimize waste and reduce future impact, one must first measure their footprint, which requires significant data. Deeper understandings of waste and greenhouse gas (GHG) outputs are then derived. Only then can a company identify the best actions to take to reduce their environmental impact. On top of this, regulations are increasing for both carbon emissions and product safety. As an example, in the US, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently issued the Final Mandatory Reporting of the Greenhouse Gases rule, requiring reporting from approximately 10,000 facilities across most industrial sectors in US. The calculations and reporting are tedious.

Companies are finding it challenging to capture and manage the impact of their carbon emissions or other environmental factors, such as waste and water. According to Multimedia Research Group, the current global market for clean technology products and services is more than US$284 billion and is forecasted to grow to more than US$1.3 trillion in 2017.

Do you know your carbon impact? The SAP EcoHub team is featuring "sustainability" as a theme over the next few weeks. Join us for two upcoming webinars. On December 7, we will focus on effective EHS management. On December 9, we will focus on energy management best practices that deliver business value.

Go green!

Sincerely,

Accounts Payable is Going "Lean and Green"
Companies are tightening financial controls and automating business processes. But for many, the invoice-to-pay process remains stubbornly manual. Even in globe-straddling enterprises using rich ERP platforms like SAP, the invoices arrive, get keyed into the system and eventually are filed in cabinets and warehoused in boxes. The process is repetitive, wasteful, and error-prone. It steals resources and time that could be spent on more strategic priorities. In most cases, the people responsible for managing the process cannot get the data needed to identify blocks and bottlenecks, and have little confidence that they can receive timely, accurate information on demand. But they can also support a more sustainable IT infrastructure. This article discusses five key ways in which output management can help SAP software customers reduce their consumption of paper, printer consumables, hardware, and power. Read more.

Building a Green Supply Chain – A Fun and Profitable Job
Most companies are already facing explicit demands on emission reduction in the supply chain, and with legislation and fuel price volatility, meeting these demands will become increasingly important.

Syncron supply chain solutions help manufacturing companies reduce the environmental effects of a supply chain by:

Greatly reducing the need for emergency ordering
    Enabling customer controlled local sourcing
    Enabling direct shipment solutions
Supporting product and/or customer-specific transportation methods
Reducing buyback/scrap by optimizing stock level with accurate forecasting
    Reducing less-than-truckload transports
